Voluntary Action South West Surrey is a new organisation which will be launched on 1st April 2008.
Three existing organisations, Guildford Association for Voluntary Services (GAVS), Farnham Voluntary
Service Council and Haslemere and District Volunteer Bureau will merge to form the new organisation
serving the boroughs of Guildford and Waverley.
Because small groups often struggle on their own to make sure they are running properly and
complying with legislation and all the things voluntary organisations have to do, as well as finding
enough volunteers to keep vital services running, Voluntary Action will now be able to supply the
infrastructure to free up organisations to run their services more effectively. GAVS previously offered
this service in Guildford but the service was limited by inadequate resources. Although Haslemere
and Farnham have volunteer centres, there was no organisation delivering infrastructure services in
Waverley and there have been difficulties finding enough volunteers for vital services.
The merger and emergence of the new Voluntary Action SW Surrey, therefore, provides an opportunity
to pool resources and extend the full range of services to the whole of Guildford and Waverley
Their aims are:
1) To help people to find volunteering opportunities and organisations to recruit volunteers by
running Volunteer Centres.
2) To offer free information, advice and support to community and voluntary groups to help them be
as effective as possible
3) To act as the central point of contact to find out about the estimated 1600 voluntary and community
groups operating in our area.
