Treloar’s Moving On Project
The Treloar Moving On in the Community Project for North West Surrey, based at Woking College, has
now been up and running for 2 years. The project is aimed at supporting people with a physical or
sensory disability who want to move on in the community. This support could be around exploring
employment possibilities (both paid and voluntary), finding leisure and social opportunities, further
training opportunities and support around locating suitable accommodation.
Moving On is funded by Treloar Trust which is based in Alton, Hampshire. Treloar’s also runs Treloar
School and Treloar College which provide high quality education and development towards
independence for over 320 children and young adults with different types of physical disabilities from all
over the country. The Moving On Project was founded following research done at the college which found
that many former students were struggling to become independent with many still living at home with
parents, not doing many social activities and struggling to find suitable employment.
The three-year pilot has so far supported around 45 people in and around the Woking and Guildford
areas with Craig Holder, the local Moving On disability outreach worker, currently supporting a further
12 people in a variety of different areas. For example, someone is currently exploring the possibility of
getting involved with voluntary work: Craig is supporting them through the initial stages with this, and
someone else wants assistance to gain new skills through a college course.
Moving On in North West Surrey runs alongside the same project in Lewisham. As Craig explains: “The
way Moving On works is that an outreach worker plans with a person to support them over a short period
of time. They agree on realistic goals together and then break down the whole goal into a series of
tasks which we work on together – for instance I might research possible wheel-chair accessible sports
activities and the Moving On client might explore how he or she and get transport organised to get there.
We set the main goal at the beginning of the time we start working together – so we keep focused on
what we are trying to achieve.”
As the project is funded by Treloar’s there is no cost to any people who get involved with the project.
We are hoping that following the three year pilot that the project will continue in both North West Surrey
and the Lewisham areas and that other people or organisations in other areas will take on the concept
of the Moving On Project.
People can either refer themselves to the Moving On project or a friend, relative or carer can refer
