I think the means testing for everything can be very unfair.  I can understand if disabled people are
rich and can afford to pay for things they should not get tax payers money but a lot of disabled
people are not rich.  A lot are just living on a pension or allowances.  If they try to save up for
something the amount of money seems to be counted as savings and it does not matter that it
might be money set aside for something essential like household repairs.  It does not encourage
people to be sensible with their money and the means testing itself can be very upsetting, especially
for elderly people that have always been proud and independent.  Surely that could be done in a
better way?

Response:

Yes, but isn’t the idea to make a level playing field for everybody?.  If a disabled person has to spend
a large part of their income on disability services and equipment that able bodied people do not
need, it is not a level playing field, is it?  There should be a minimum standard for all disabled people
that is not means tested at all.

Response:

There has to be means testing.  Without it costs would be out of this world and nobody would get
anything when they really needed it.  What would make sense, though, is if equipment cost less.
Why does it cost so much because it is for disabled people?  They say it is because they do not
sell very many so they cannot mass produce things. The truth is they do not sell very many because
the prices are too high.

Means Testing

We just pulled out of getting a conversion through the local council.  After going into all our
finances in detail at the beginning, we progressed so far and then were bombarded with hugely
lengthy forms to fill in which gave more detail about us than you can imagine.  It is not that we have
anything to hide but the whole thing was so de-humanising it stripped all self respect away from us.
It was horrible.  Surely they can see we would not be wanting disability adaptations if we did not
need them and if we had loads of money we would have the most luxurious conversion money
could buy, not the basics we were trying to get.  They wonder why there is low uptake for things.
This is why.  People deserve to be able to keep their self respect.
