I was born with a physical disability.  I have lived independently since the age of about 21 in council
properties that have been adapted.  I am now 36.  I had my first car through the Motability Scheme
and I have owned my current car for about 7 years.

While I was an administration assistant for 16 years I trained as a counsellor.  I am now an Accredited
counsellor and member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.  When I was
looking for a counsellor during my training I looked for one who worked with disability.
There were only 2 or 3 in the area.  One I met visibly had a mobility disability.
I did, and still do have, issues with my disability.

Having a disability can cause great frustration, issues with relationships, at work, with family.  It can be
difficult to talk to your family if you have negative feelings towards them yet you are dependant on
them.  I feel that society has made a start on equal opportunities and tries to support people physically.
I used to get angry and upset because I felt like I was just like a broken object that need equipment
and to be fixed and not like a person who had feelings and thoughts about what was happening. I
really feel strongly that with mental and emotional support, people with disabilities could live a fuller life.
It's not just about having the physical ability to live life to the full but the motivation and self confidence.

If you or anyone you know or anyone who cares for a person with disabilities would like counselling
