2008 Paralympic Games Opens
Cyclists win GB's first 2 gold medals
Simon Richardson from Porthcawl won Britain’s first gold medal at the Beijing Games. He broke the one
kilometre time trial world record. Simon competes in a class for cyclists with impairment in one or both
legs. Glasgow’s Aileen McGlynn won gold in the women’s one kilometre time trial with pilot rider Ellen
Hunter. They broke their own world record.
Essex athlete Danny Crates carried Great Britain ‘s flag at the spectacular opening ceremony
in Beijing on 6th September. Danny, who lost an arm in a road accident in 1994, will be defending his
800 metres title at the Games.

Peter Norfolk to defend his Tennis title
Hampshire tennis star, Peter Norfolk who was Britain's first ever Paralympic tennis
medallist when he struck gold at the Athens Paralympics in 2004, is hoping to
retain his singles title in the Quad event in Beijing. He is also hoping for success
in the Quad doubles in which he will partner Paralympic newcomer, Jamie Burdekin.
Peter, Jamie, Simon, Aileen, Ellen and Danny are amongst 206 British athletes
who are in Beijing for the 2008 Paralympic games.
